A lot of people see Macey skateboarding and wonder how we did it. This page show the progression via a few YouTube videos.
This is a short video of Macey’s first lessons. She was only 8 weeks old. I was just getting her used to being on the board. The wheels were tightened so they didn’t roll too much on the carpet.
In this still photo, she is sleeping “belly-up” next to her skateboard. (Taken with my iPhone) Even at three years olds, she spends a lot of time sleeping upside down like this!
Skateboard Progress
For a couple of weeks, I was letting her just sit on her skateboard while on the carpeted floor of my office. She could change directions while on the board with no problems. I started trying to slide the board while she was on the board…but she would jump off immediately. Withing a short period, I convinced her to stay on and ride the board as I drag it across the floor. At one point, I had her is following along with the board (while trying to get a treat) with two or more feet on the board.

May 24 Skateboarding Progress: Right now, Macey is jumping onto the skateboard and riding it out. Actually, that’s easy for her and would do it dozens of times in a row. At this stage, she would occasionally pump a couple of times with one of her back legs. That step takes longer. She was very comfortable on the board, whether it is moving forward or backwards.
Every few days, you could see the progress
Macey was getting the hang of pushing her skateboard from a dead stop. This was more difficult.
Darla and I took Macey to the skateboard park…before the kids get there. She was much more relaxed and willing to do her tricks.
These two videos show Macey continuing to develop her skateboard skills. She had a relatively short attention span. At this time of the year, small puff balls from the area aspen and cottonwood trees would blow across the concrete. She would jump off her board to chase one down. Other skaters, kids yelling, or other dogs in the area got her attention. Still, each day she improved!
I began letting her ride her skateboard in the driveway in front of our house. Working with her outdoors seems to have been a good decision. She loves kids and was easily distracted by them!
We still have a long way to go, but Macey is honing her skateboard skills each day. We tried letting her go down one of the ramps, but she bailed quickly.
I continued to work with her and her long board. She was more focused when at home.
This video was taken at the Pinedale, WY skateboard park. She was still a puppy and was easily distracted if a puffball from an aspen or cottonwood blew by. She was still a “youngster” at the time, skinny tail and all!
This Instagram shows Macey watching a skateboard video of herself.
Over the past couple of years, we have lots of videos of Macey skateboarding in the street in front of our house and some at the Skate Park. Corey compiled this clip.
Macey is three years old now and is a beautiful and wonderful dog! We love her, just like Mandy and Zeffy before her. They were Golden Retrievers, too!
